To launch the Mutual Inspirations Festival 2020 – John Amos Comenius, the Embassy of the Czech Republic is thrilled to release short videos of children of all ages teaching about the Czech Republic every Wednesday on its social media! Children from all over the United States have submitted their pieces about food, travel, customs and more to the Embassy’s project in honor of the Father of Modern Education, who deeply cared about universal education for all and modern teaching methods, such as learning through play.

The Embassy of the Czech Republic invites you to join the first annual Czech Embassy Bike Challenge. Cycle 19.18 kilometers to mark Czech Independence Day, which was established in the year 1918, and explore other great points of interest associated with the Czech Republic and its history around Washington, DC. The Challenge is open to everyone, young and old and full of sportsmanship or thirst to learn, during the race period between September 28 – October 28, 2020.

In line with the EU theme of environmental sustainability, the Embassy of the Czech Republic presents a virtual workshop with the acclaimed artist Veronika Richterova who creates much of her art from old plastic, giving a new life to what we consider “garbage." Through various methods of cutting, heating and assemblage she builds colorfully translucent forms of objects and forms of life around us, from crocodiles to chandelier light fixtures to plants. Her obsession with things plastic doesn’t stop at creating artwork only, she has also collected several thousand different PET plastic bottles from much of the world for a Museum she is preparing, and writes about the history of usage of plastic objects that are so omnipresent in our lives. In this creative workshop, she will teach children how to turn discarded plastic bottles into wonderful butterflies.

Director Slávek Horák's biopic Havel will screen online until October 28, as part of the V4 Film Series. The film follows Václav Havel's life during Prague Spring (1968) and the Velvet Revolution (1989) to ultimately his presidency. Variety film critic Alissa Simon wrote, "This creative biopic of the playwright who became prsident...doesn't let pesky facts get in the way of a good story." Delve into this new film from the comfort of your couch, exploring the life of an extraordinary man.

The Embassy of the Czech Republic will present, in connection to the V4 Film Series, a selection of Czech classic cartoons curated by the Czech National Film Archive on view online until October 28, 2020. The films include Ferda the Ant in the Foreign Service, 40 Grandfathers, Two Balls, among others. Savor a Saturday watching cartoons created by Czech traditional animators.
