Film: The Last Race

September 14, 2022, 8:00 PM

The Avalon Theatre will screen The Last Race (Poslední závod) on September 14, 2022, beginning at 8 pm.  The drama recounts the true story of Czech skiing pioneers Bohumil Hanč and Václav Vrbata, who participated in a skiing race in Krokonoše mountains in 1913. When a blizzard renders the race impossible, German athlete Emerich Rath risks his life to try to save his friend. The film reconstructs the race almost minute by minute and shows life at the beginning of the twentieth century amid poverty and hardship as well as the relations between native Czech and German populations. This story reveals how rivalries can be set aside, with the only race that counts being that to save a fellow human life.
